Many of us freeze when asked to describe ourselves. The trick is to imagine you are chatting with someone new at the community centre and simply tell a few stories.

Where did you grow up, and where has life taken you? What was your work, and what keeps you busy now? Hockey on TV, a good mystery novel, euchre night, summers at the cottage? Children, grandchildren, even great grandchildren? A dog that rules the house? Details like these give people something to write back about.

A couple of subjects are best saved for later. Long stories about a past marriage can make a reader wonder whether you are ready to meet someone new, so a line or two is plenty. Politics is best left out altogether.

Stuck for words? Write about what you would love to share with someone. A drive to see the fall colours, a winter escape somewhere warm, Sunday brunch, or simply someone to watch the evening news with. Using "we" and "us" now and then helps a reader picture themselves beside you.

Above all, be honest, be cheerful and be yourself. The right person will like you just the way you are.
